This is part two of the Down to Earth Mother election special. I purport to know little about politics, but on September 7, like all Aussies, I must vote in the Australian Election and both likely candidates are complete buffoons. This week is dedicated to my search for meaning in the world’s crappiest election campaign.
A few weeks ago, I signed this petition with Amnesty International to tell Kevin Rudd that sending asylum seekers to PNG to be processed (and incarcerated) is wrong. As I wrote in in my comment, PNG is not a solution, it is simply a case of sending desperate people from one kind of hell to another.
And what about Papua New Guinea? This small nation with more than 800 unique languages has plenty of racial tensions of its own. Already the country operates under a loose authority, with the wantok system (basically tribal) often beyond the realms of the actual law. In Port Moresby and other major cities like Lei and Mount Hagen violent crime is rife.
I find it difficult to believe the same Prime Minister who apologised for the Stolen Generation can show so little compassion for boat people. Perhaps he’s hoping someone down the line will apologise on his behalf?
Anyway, I would like to vote for Labor, as it seems to be the (slightly) greener of the two major parties. But K-Rudd, I’m afraid your shameful PNG “solution” is a deal-breaker.
